This two story powerhouse is capable of providing 100% of the energy needs for the new Wishard Hospital Replacement Facility, and is located on the Wishard campus.

The facility is owned and operated by Citizens Energy Group.

The first floor of this facility contains two 3,000 ton chillers, chilled water pumps, tower water pumps, and associated piping. On the second floor are three 800 horsepower steam boilers and all related steam and condensate equipment and piping systems. Finally on the roof of the facility are two 8,550 GPM cooling towers. The entire facility is operated remotely by Citizens, which precludes the necessity for any operational personnel in the building on a regular basis.

Greiner Brothers installed all equipment, piping, and related systems in the facility. The boilers had to be rigged up to the second floor and through the side of the building which required the utilization of two cranes teaming up on each boiler lift. This can be seen in the photos below. Piping systems installed in the building by Greiner Brothers ranged as large as 36” in diameter. Greiner personnel in charge of this project were Steve Logan – Project Manager, and John Hunt – Foreman.

Another project also currently being completed by Greiner on the Wishard campus is the complete installation of all plumbing and medical gas systems for the new Wishard Hospital Replacement Facility.

The vision for the IUPUI Campus Center is to create a “sense of place and community” for students and faculty.

Major tenants include the food court, bookstore, a 1000-person multi-purpose room, a theater, Enrollment Center, retail functions, student lounges and meeting spaces.

The building is made of brick and metal materials for the facades and elements, reducing the visual scale of the large, 250,000 gross square foot complex. Greiner provided work for the HVAC and mechanical systems.

Paul Howard relates how the open spaces in the building provided some dizzying experiences for some of the crew. “The guys on the lifts had to get their air legs and quickly get accustomed to working very high up in the air. The roof and storm drains were some puzzle pieces they had to get put in the right space, and at the right time.”

Located on the IU School of Medicine campus in Indianapolis, Research III is home to the school’s cancer research initiatives.

In this building scientists and research are working to unlock the puzzle of cancer. They also work to develop cancer treatments. As stated on the cancer.iu.edu website, “Other specialized cancer research initiatives moving into the new building include experimental and developmental therapeutics, the tumor microenvironment program and hematopoiesis and immunology. Research III also will be home to the Center for Immunobiology, an interdisciplinary group of faculty that studies organ transplant immunology, autoimmunity, innate and acquired immunity and the immunobiology of cancer.”

Working and building HVAC and plumbing in such a building required some special care. Paul Howard, retired foreman for Greiner Brothers and a Project Manager at the time, remembers it well. “The hardest part was the sixth floor,” says Howard. “It housed the ultimate clean room and had massive amounts of duct work. All the conduit had to be installed in very compact spaces –  it seemed like solving a Rubic’s cube at times. Our guys did a great job working in such tight conditions.”

The challenging environment allowed Greiner to show how well they work in unique environments.  Howard continues, “The men had quite a challenge in the sixth floor Mechanical Room – with the large air handling units, exhaust fans and sloped steel structures.  This gave them a challenge to install all of the steam, chilled water & heat recovery piping to each area – let alone the storm piping, exhaust & large supply duct.”
